Students, parents and grandparents may have many questions before sending their child or grandchild to Norgesskolen. Here we have gathered some of the most frequently asked questions.  If you have other questions, please send an e-mail to

How do they live at Norgesskolen?
The students live in boarding rooms at Sagavoll. There are both single and double rooms, and we do our best to place the youngest students in double rooms so that they are not alone. The students are divided into groups after age and gender and each group gets their own group leader. In this way they get to know an adult leader in addition to their teacher. We have a good overview at all times.

How is the food?
At Sagavoll we are served a normal Norwegian diet. This includes among other things a lot of bread, which can be unusual for many. We eat all meals in the dining hall and the hall leader eats with his or her group. For breakfast we get oat meal, fresh bread, knekkebrød (crackers), cheese, jam, meat and fresh fruit. For lunch there’s always a salad bar, sometimes soup or some other warm dish along with bread/bread rolls, and different types of toppings. Dinner consists of potatoes, a fish or meat dish, vegetables. In the evenings they eat food that the students prepare themselves for lunch (stored in a cool place). And some evenings there are surprises such as waffles or cake.

My child needs a special diet – what do we do?
It is important that we get detailed information about your child’s diet so that we can notify the kitchen at Sagavoll in advance.

Can they do laundry there?
Yes, during the first two weeks they are able to do laundry. It is important that all clothes are labeled, especially for the younger students as the group leaders do their laundry. We assume that the older students do their own laundry. Norgesskolen covers the expenses for laundry.

What do we pack?
In addition to regular clothes, we recommend that you bring rainwear, warm and wind stopping clothes and shoes for both out and indoor use. Remember to pack swimwear and a towel for swimming, because if the weather allows us, go swimming. The school supplies pillows, duvets, bed sheets and towels to all students. Please read the equipment list.

Can they bring a cell phone, iPad and a laptop?
They can bring a cell phone, iPad and laptop. They can however only be used in the communication hour. Then students can contact the family and also play games. Laptops and iPads will be used in class sometimes for educational purposes.

Should they bring pocket money?
When paying the school fee 300 NOK goes to pocket money.  We have a student bank where the students may withdraw their 300 NOK. The bank has fixed opening hours and they can get cash when needed. The student may bring more money or a credit card if needed. We emphasize that cash and valuables that the students bring are their own responsibility.

Do they have to know Norwegian before coming to Norgesskolen?
No knowledge of Norwegian is required to attend Norgesskolen. In the classes, the students are divided into groups after age and language ability.

What happens if my child have to go home?
Sometimes during Norgesskolen students have to go home either because they are sick, have home sickness or because they have broken the school rules. If this were to happen, the student´s parents/contact person will naturally be notified in advance, and it will happen at your own cost. In these cases, we cannot refund any of the costs as expenses for personnel and rent are the same.

Do you have rules for alcohol and tobacco?
We emphasize that alcohol and any type of narcotics are strictly forbidden. It is neither allowed to smoke at the school. As a part of looking out for the students, the school leaders will make sure that these rules are followed. Regarding this we inform you that braking the rules can lead to the students being sent home. If this were to happen, the parents/contact person of the student will naturally be notified in advance, and it will happen at your own cost.

Can they bring an instrument?
Yes, they can bring their own instrument. They will have time to practise during the evenings. We encourage students to show their talents on our talent evening and at the final show. We do also have access to several pianos, gitars and drums at the school, so we often hear one or another student playing or practising – and that is so fun.

Do they have to be Norwegian citizens to attend?
The students do not have to be a Norwegian citizen to attend. Most of the students are, but students of all nationalities are welcome to join.
